The Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council (SDWG) is seeking a Communications Officer to manage website content, social networks, developing effective communication tools and promoting the working group's activities and products, among other tasks.


The SDWG is one of six Arctic Council Working Groups, and is tasked with protecting and improving the environment, economy, social conditions, and health of Indigenous communities and inhabitants of the Arctic. The SDWG Secretariat is hosted by Université Laval as a result of a Global Affairs Canada Call for Proposals.

The Secretariat's role is to support the Working Group in fulfilling its mandate by providing administrative support such as organizing meetings and drafting reports, disseminating official SDWG communications, distributing documents, coordinating the working group's activities, providing logistical support, managing the SDWG's website, and performing any other administrative tasks assigned by the SDWG chair or by the SDWG as a whole. The Executive Secretary manages the staff of the SDWG Secretariat, the finances associated with the Secretariat, and in some cases, the finances associated with projects carried out by the SDWG.

The priorities and directives of the Working Groups’ secretariats are established by their Chairs. The Executive Secretary of the SDWG Secretariat is responsible, together with its team, for addressing the administrative and logistical needs of SDWG and its Chair.

Job summary

Reporting to the Executive Secretary, the Communications Officer will assist the latter in their duties.

This person will be responsible for managing website content, social networks, developing effective communication tools and promoting the Working Group's activities and products. They will also support the organization of meetings and other activities. This position involves working closely with members of the SDWG, participants in meetings and other activities, the communications team at the Arctic Council Secretariat, and other Working Groups.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Plans, leads, organizes and oversees communications and public relations activities related to the priorities of the SDWG;
  • Coordinates the promotion of the Working Group's activities and projects, as well as related content and products;
  • Within the framework of communication strategies and activities, drafts the communication plan, elaborates activity plans, proposes communication or promotional approaches, activities or tools, and participates in their implementation;
  • Conceives, drafts, verifies, comments and prepares documents such as Web content, publications on various platforms, articles, reports and promotional material;
  • Participates in the development of strategies to promote the SDWG to internal and external target audiences;
  • Supports and collaborates to the organization and execution of SDWG meetings and activities.

Profile and assets :

  • Knowledge and interest for the Arctic and Circumpolar regions;
  • Good project management skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Knowledge of international organizations involved in Arctic issues;
  • Knowledge of northern and Arctic communities;
  • Ability to work in an international context.

This position is based at Université Laval in Québec City; Office of the Vice Rector of Research and Innovation, Pavillon des Sciences de l’éducation


Two-year contract, with possibility of renewal, open to nationals of Arctic States. The person filling this position must be proficient in both written and spoken English.
