The BlueConnect project aims to contribute to ocean competence development amongst Arctic communities, by promoting transregional knowledge exchange and dialogue within the Arctic’s ocean economy. To this end, the project will design and implement community-based transdisciplinary workshops centered on three key thematic priorities aligned with the SDWG’s mandate:
These themes will serve as entry points for collaborative action research and engagement. In partnership with local stakeholders, the project will identify which of the three areas best aligns with the community’s specific needs and will prioritize it for the initial Action Research Cycle (ARC).
The BlueConnect project builds upon the 2021 SDWG-endorsed initiative Blue Bioeconomy in the Arctic Region, which revealed that regional blue economies across the Arctic are shaped by distinct cultural, geographic, and community-based perspectives—particularly among Indigenous communities—regarding how blue economy initiatives should support local well-being. The project also underscored the critical need for relevant education and capacity-building efforts to foster a resilient and inclusive Arctic blue bioeconomy.
The BlueConnect project builds on the knowledge and networks established through the AlaskaNor (2018–2021) and ArcBlue (2022–2025) initiatives, translating prior research into tangible action across the Arctic. By fostering meaningful knowledge exchange among diverse stakeholders and encouraging collaboration across regions, BlueConnect strengthens shared learning and community engagement. Central to the project is a commitment to empowering Arctic residents—particularly Indigenous communities—by enhancing their capacity to navigate emerging challenges and opportunities within the blue economy. Through targeted education and training delivered via community-based workshops, BlueConnect equips participants with the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary to actively shape sustainable resource management and economic development. In doing so, the project supports locally driven strategies that reflect the realities of the circumpolar North and contribute to resilient, inclusive growth.
